Would you like to be part of a committed workforce and business support team? The role of Senior Business Support Assistant offers a great step up on the business support / administration ladder as it offers a wide exposure to the entirety of the Adults, Wellbeing and Health Partnerships (AWHP) directorate.
We are excited to be hiring a new Senior Business Support Assistant to join our fantastic AWHP Workforce team. The role is currently based in Millmead House, Guildford, however the Council is currently going through Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) and therefore it is likely this role will be based in the East of the county – this can be further discussed during the selection process.
About the Team
Our team manage a range of business, staffing and recruitment activities across the AWHP directorate, both for and on behalf of our front-line managers, which means they can focus on making a difference to the residents of Surrey. With this in mind, we have an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join us.
With significant workforce change as part of Local Government Reform, the team will play a pivotal role in helping colleagues and services adapt and thrive in a new environment. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a wide range of people and workforce workstreams, supporting the organisation through a period of transformation.
You’ll be working in a team that will provide you with support and guidance, and we’ll also give you the freedom to be creative and use your own initiative. Our team has a proven track record of career success, and we’ll work with you to progress, challenging you on a day-to-day basis and offering you opportunities to work on new and varied work.
Our team operates in an agile and flexible way, combining home and office working to ensure we deliver outcomes effectively while meeting service needs.
About the Role
You will be leading on various processes such as recruitment, OM (organisational management system) and business support. The role is fast paced, but we offer a thorough induction and support program to help you learn new processes. Our team also provides support on bespoke projects and with LGR coming into effect in April 2027 there will be significant opportunity to be more involved in project work and delivering on high profile objectives.
Our job profiles will tell you what you’ll be doing, but more important to us is how you’ll do it. We want people who are self-motivated and committed to working in partnership with others, from junior colleagues and peers to the most senior leaders in the Council. Service users are at the heart of what we do and we expect you to have the same values. You’ll have exceptionally high standards, which goes without saying, but more than that, you’ll be someone who wants to find more efficient ways of working.
You’ll need to be highly organised, proactive, and confident in managing your own workload, often balancing competing priorities in a fast‑paced and varied environment. Working as part of a supportive and collaborative team, you’ll contribute to a range of workforce and People initiatives, helping services adapt to new ways of working. This role offers excellent exposure across the organisation, valuable experience across multiple workstreams, and a strong opportunity to build your skills and accelerate your career development.
To apply, we request that you submit a CV and you will be asked the following 4 questions:
- Describe a time when you had to manage competing priorities with conflicting deadlines. How did you organise your workload, and what was the outcome?
- Give an example of a time when you were required to follow a clear, step‑by‑step process or set of procedures when maintaining records or using a business system (e.g. HR, workforce, finance, or reporting systems). How did you ensure each step was completed accurately, and what was the outcome?
- Provide an example of how you have worked with colleagues to improve a process, service, or way of working. What was your role and what changed as a result?
- Describe a time when you worked with a range of different people or teams who had differing priorities, expectations, or ways of working. How did you adapt your approach or communication style, and what was the outcome?
Before submitting your application, we recommend you read the job description & Our Life at Surrey handbook to get an insight into working at Surrey.
