House to House Canvasser

Hours:  Casual Hours

Do you have the drive and some spare time to deliver property forms and to go door-knocking as part of the annual canvass? If so we would like to hear from you.

We are looking for enthusiastic, focussed and friendly canvassers to help us with the annual compilation of the Register of Electors.  This forms an important part of maintaining democracy and the right to vote at elections and referenda.

At the end of July, a Household Enquiry Form (HEF) will be sent to each household in the borough to collect information on people living at the property entitled to register to vote.  Visits will need to be made to properties who have not responded to the HEF after a 1st reminder has been sent.

The role

You will be required to visit all properties assigned to you. You will have two specific visits to make:

  1. To visit properties who do not respond to the HEF in order to obtain a completed form on the doorstep. You will be required to provide assistance and guidance to the householder to help them complete the form. If when you visit there is no answer, you will be required to post the form.
  2. To visit properties where individuals have not responded to an Invitation to Register (ITR). When a completed HEF is received, any new eligible elector added to the HEF will be sent an Invitation to Register (ITR), which must be completed to add their name to the register. Visits will need to be made to these individuals who do not respond. You will not be required to get ITR’s completed on the doorstep, but you will need to encourage the individual to return the form or ideally to register online.

Compulsory training will be provided, and you will receive additional payment for travel and mobile phone expenses. Access to a mobile phone is essential as canvassing involves lone working and your safety is of paramount importance to us.

Accuracy, an eye for detail and good customer service skills are essential for the role.

Time Period

Work should be completed in your own time, and for best results, in evenings and weekends. The house visits will take place between Friday 11 October and Monday 4 November.

Payment

You will be paid a rate for each form you deliver, and a higher rate for each completed form you return following a visit. Typically, you can earn anywhere between £400 and £500.

Applicants

The role is open to anyone, including those who already work for the council. You should know that,

  • we can only accept applications from persons who are not connected to, nor will assist any political party;
  • you must be aged 18+;
  • you have the right to work in the UK.

Further information and to apply

If you would like to discuss the role in more detail, please contact Alex Mammous in Democratic Services on 01372 474182 or email Natalie Bannister at nbannister@elmbridge.gov.uk

Closing Date: 5pm Tuesday 27 August 2019

Assessment: Applications will be assessed using the criteria in the person specification. If your application is successful you will be invited to attend an interview on either Thursday 5 or Friday 6 September.
