About the Role
The Surrey Registration Service are recruiting Ceremonies Registrars. You will have a professional appearance and a positive outlook to represent Surrey Registration Service at ceremonies. You will be personally involved with customers in both a professional and sensitive manner at a life defining and emotional moments in their lives.
Previous ceremony experience would be beneficial but not essential as full training will be provided.
The role of Ceremonies Registrar is to register and/or conduct ceremonies at a register office located at Guildford, Leatherhead or Weybridge, or at licensed venues within the area. There are approximately 120 licensed venues in Surrey. You will ensure that the ceremony can legally take place by asking specific questions prescribed in law, and that the legal vows are said correctly before recording the legal entry into the Marriage / Civil Partnership register.
The security of the marriage register, certificates and legal paperwork is paramount to this role and it is the responsibility of the Ceremonies Registrar to ensure that this documentation is kept secure at all times.
Registering at couple’s ceremonies is a wonderful job, however, we do have to stress that attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure is essential to this role, as you may have other ceremonies to attend that day, and there is only a short amount of time to complete the registration.
You must also be able to deal with flash photography, and understand that your photograph may be taken and shared on social media, as you are part of a couple’s special day.
The Surrey Registration Service conducts approximately 4,000 civil ceremonies each year, the majority of these take place between the months of April - October, bank holiday weekends and Christmas/New Year, and so this is when you need to be available. Within the first year, you will be trained to register marriages/civil partnerships; you may then be considered for further training to conduct ceremonies. Once this training is complete you will also be expected to be on a standby rota to cover sickness or emergencies across Surrey.
You will need to have the willingness and ability to travel around the county to meet the demands of the role.
