About the Role

The Information Governance (IG) team is a vibrant, newly centralised team responsible for supporting the County Council with Data Protection, Freedom of Information and Records Management, as well as helping with the preparation for local government reorganisation. Our aim is to help the Council maximise the potential of digital and data to transform the way we work, improve accessibility and achieve the Council’s purpose of making sure that no one is left behind.

A small team of Information Governance Specialists covers five areas: Records Management, Data Protection, Freedom of Information and Transparency, Information Sharing and Subject Access Requests. Each specialist is responsible for managing and resolving complex IG requests, providing expert guidance, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and best practices. This post will work closely with our existing part-time Information Sharing Specialist.

In this role, you will focus on safeguarding personal data held by the County Council and ensuring that information sharing practices with partners and providers comply with legal and regulatory requirements. You will provide expert advice to services on sharing information internally and externally, and on working within the framework of the Surrey Multi Agency Information Sharing Protocol (MAISP). Your role will be crucial in maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of personal data within the context of Partnership working.

Your key responsibilities as an Information Governance Specialist - Information Sharing will include:

  • Providing expert advice and guidance to Council Services on information sharing and data sharing agreements
  • Working with partner agencies such as Health on data sharing activities and attending regular external working groups
  • Direct engagement with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Providing training and support to junior IG staff
  • Contributing to the development of IG policies and procedures
  • Managing complex IG requests including internal reviews where required as a senior member of the IG team

Your Application

In order to be considered for shortlisting, your application will clearly evidence the following skills and align with our behaviours:

  • In-depth understanding of Information Governance (IG) principles, legislation, and best practices
  • Experience in developing and managing information sharing agreements and protocols with external partners
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, facilitation and influencing skills, capable of explaining complex information governance issues clearly and effectively to various stakeholders
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with internal departments, external partners, and senior stakeholders to achieve common goals
  • Ability to provide clear and concise advice and guidance on IG-related processes and queries
  • Strong organisational and time management skills to handle a diverse caseload and meet deadlines

To apply, we request that you submit a CV and answer the following questions:

  1. Please describe a situation where you identified a significant information governance or compliance risk. How did you assess the impact, communicate it to senior stakeholders to ensure clarity, and ensure mitigating actions were taken?
  2. Please give an example of how you have influenced senior stakeholders or external partners to support a new data sharing initiative. What challenges did you face?

The job advert closes at 23:59 on Sunday 19th April 2026 with interviews to follow.

Interviews will take place at Victoria Gate, Chobham Road, Woking GU21 6JD.
