Volunteer role introduction

Please note that this is a volunteer role and a salary is not paid.

Are you seeking a fulfilling opportunity that offers a genuine feeling of accomplishment? Use your skills and personality to become a Volunteer with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and embark on a new challenge!

We put prevention at the heart of SFRS and are looking for talented people who are passionate about engaging with our diverse communities and to help people keep themselves safe.

Our volunteer team provides key support to service initiatives and events throughout the year to inform and educate people in safety at home, on the roads and outdoors, and help communities to gain skills and awareness to stay safe and live well.

Volunteers are expected to wear a uniform (which we provide) and represent SFRS with pride while upholding the Core Code of Ethics which underpin the culture of our organisation.

As a volunteer in our community, you will engage with the public directly, while assisting our operational and support staff.

Volunteer roles include:

  • SFRS event support at fire station open days and car washes
  • Community engagement at public events like country shows, school fetes and partner events across Surrey.
  • Safe and Well Visits. This is a lone-volunteering role visiting residents in their own home to install hard-of-hearing alarms and provide home fire safety guidance.
  • Assisting crews with training exercises and scenarios.
  • Education team support with fire safety engagement across schools.

You must be over 18 to apply for this role.

  • Happy to volunteer regularly throughout the year, ideally at least once a month.
  • A friendly and approachable manner.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A positive and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Dependability and punctual.
  • Access to transportation or the ability to travel to various locations across the county

Our commitment to you

  • A comprehensive induction and e-learning training package.
  • Designated staff members and who will serve as your main points of contact.
  • Reimbursement of expenses (travel and refreshments).

To be shortlisted for interview please outline in a covering letter (maximum 500 words):

  • Why would you like to volunteer for our service?
  • Please share relevant skills, knowledge, and any experience you have in volunteering and engaging with the public.

For an informal chat about the volunteer role, please contact Volunteers Manager Henrietta East, henrietta.east@surreycc.gov.uk .

This opportunity will remain open until we have recruited an adequate number of volunteers. A Standard or Enhanced DBS ‘Disclosure and Barring Service’ check for regulated activity (formerly known as CRB) will be required depending on the specific volunteer role. We look forward to receiving your application, please click on the apply online button below to submit.
