Epsom & Ewell Borough Council is seeking a committed and practical Downskeeper to help protect, maintain and manage the unique landscape of Epsom and Walton Downs, home of the Derby.

This is a varied frontline role combining countryside management, public safety and byelaw enforcement. You will provide a uniformed presence across the Downs, carrying out patrols, conservation and maintenance work, and ensuring compliance with the Epsom and Walton Downs Regulation Act 1984.

Duties include grounds maintenance, habitat management, litter clearance, repairs to paths, fencing and signage, use of manual and powered tools, and engaging confidently with members of the public.

The role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions on a shift pattern that includes early starts, weekends and bank holidays. You will be required to manage challenging situations calmly and professionally, including interactions with dog walkers, cyclists, horse riders and other stakeholders, and to support community safety by working closely with colleagues, the Police and partner organisations.

The ideal candidate will be able to work safely and effectively in an outdoor environment and carry out the practical tasks required of the role. This includes walking over uneven ground, working in all weather conditions, and undertaking manual handling as part of day‑to‑day duties.

You will be calm and confident when working around horses and dogs and able to handle them safely when required. You will be reliable, able to work independently and as part of a team, and comfortable managing a varied workload.

Strong communication skills and a customer‑focused approach are essential, along with the ability to deal appropriately with challenging situations when they arise. You will be willing to undertake further training relevant to the role (including horse handling).

A full driving licence is essential for travelling around the site/estate and for operating vehicles as part of the role.

In return, we offer 24 days annual leave (rising to 29 after 5 years’ service), subsidised gym membership and car parking, and an entitlement to join the local government pension scheme.
