Bourne Hall Museum is seeking a highly organised and knowledgeable Assistant to work alongside the Curator on our museum collections and the stories they tell. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in meticulous care and documentation of the collections, public engagement, conducting thorough research, planning and organizing formal education provision, exhibition development and supporting volunteers.

Key responsibilities include processing new acquisitions to the museum collections, controlling the removal and return of items to the museum and monitoring conditions in the museum stores. The assistant responds to enquiries about the collections, researches and writes text for exhibitions. A major art of the role is to assist in enhancing public engagement by developing and delivering programmes that engage schools, local communities, and visitors with the museum collections and its stories. This includes providing talks and guided walks for schoolchildren and adults, administering school loan boxes and talks, establishing contact with schoolteachers, co-ordinating children’s extracurricular learning activities and running the children’s club. Additionally, they will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

We are looking for a candidate with demonstrated experience of working in a museum or cultural setting. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional organisational and engagement skills, and the ability to work effectively on their own initiative as well as within a diverse team, Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. The ability to prioritise and manage workloads efficiently to meet the museum’s schedule is also crucial.
