This is an excellent opportunity to join our close knit, passionate and hardworking team to coordinate the support of local families through a variety of different services and sector agencies, with successful results. You will be required to work intensively with families and provide appropriate support, information, guidance, advice and practical help. You will work and liaise with agencies and practitioners, risk assess and analyse family function, dynamics, routines and relationships within the family home to help to identify the root causes of difficulties. You will also be required to use your strong administration and IT skills to document all your hard work.

You will be joining a growing, innovative multi-agency team which supports the successful co-ordination of local statutory and voluntary services to work in partnership with families to achieve sustainable and transformational change.

 

PRINCIPLE PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

  • To work as a Family Support Co-ordinator for the South West Surrey Family Support Program which is embedded within Guildford Borough Council’s Communities Team.
  • Supporting a caseload of families with multiple and complex needs who meet the criteria for intensive outreach support (level 3/4 Early Help) throughout the boroughs of Waverley and Guildford.
  • Families being supported will have a range of need around referral criteria of; unemployment, mental and physical health, school attendance, family function, parenting capacity, domestic abuse, substance misuse, safeguarding and will need intensive support to unlock the pattern of dysfunction. 
  • The purpose of the Family Support Program is to undertake holistic whole family assessments to identify needs, manage risks and use a coordinated approach with the expertise and resources of a range of multi-agency partners and put families back on a pathway to recovery within their local community. 
  • Family Coordinators will be expected to work flexible hours to meet the needs of families and the service.
  • Family Coordinators will be expected to work a combination of remote, home and office-based working.
  • Family Coordinators are expected to participate in an intensive induction program to assist them in their role as well as regular case and clinical supervision on taking up the post. This is an excellent opportunity for professional development. 

 

This is a fixed term post ending 29/03/2024 with the possibility of extending

Job Profile

Qualifications

  • Educated to at least A level / Level 3 vocational training or equivalent
  • Professional qualification in relevant field: e.g. child or adult social care, community policing, health, education, housing, youth work, etc is desirable
  • Degree or higher qualification in relevant field e.g. counselling is desirable
  • An enhanced DBS disclosure and a Children and Adults barred list check will be required for this role

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Family Support Co-ordinator:

  • Experience of working with children, young people or families with multiple and or complex needs
  • Experience gained from one of the following range of multi-agency statutory and voluntary employment backgrounds is desirable. For example, as a:
    • children or adult social workers or support worker
    • family support workers
    • community police officer
    • housing officer
    • housing related support worker
    • health visitor
    • school nurse
    • community nurse
    • CAMHS worker
    • teacher
    • education welfare officer
    • home school link family support worker
    • children’s centre family support worker
    • behaviour and attendance learning mentor within schools
    • youth offending team and or youth worker
    • worker with families with domestic abuse or substance misuse issues
    • Awareness of legislation around safeguarding, equality and diversity, health and safety and information-sharing and consent is desirable
    • Experience of multi-agency working is desirable
    • An understanding of, or a willingness to learn, what is meant by a negotiated partnership model of working, strengths and evidence-based practice and to use these models in everyday practice is desirable
    • An understanding of, or a willingness to learn about, up-to-date key concepts and theories around parenting e.g. lifespan attachment, parenting styles, ecological theory, social learning theory, transitions theory and different models of understanding and managing behaviour is desirable
    • An understanding of child and adolescent development, particularly in relation to behaviour and emotional health is desirable
    • Ability to take a hands-on approach to supporting families
    • Ability to engage with families building trust and rapport
    • Ability to work in partnership with families giving clear expectations and boundaries that are discussed and negotiated
    • Ability to carry out assessments in the home in partnership with families using a toolbox of practice tools combined with own experience, observation and expertise
    • Ability to interpret assessment data to identify strengths and needs, goal set with families and contribute to a Family Support Plan
    • Ability to offer intensive support to families around relationship, dynamics and everyday routines and function
    • Ability to influence, coach and mentor families through a process of change
    • Ability to review and celebrate progress with families
    • Ability to carry out appropriate endings and closure with families as part of exit plans
    • Ability to work as part of a team
    • Ability to be vigilant at all times to carry out the requirements of safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults
    • Ability to work effectively on own initiative, prioritise workload and meet deadlines
    • Ability to seek out support and call on the resources of the team when necessary
    • Ability to make decisions when appropriate and take responsibility for them
    • Ability to handle complex and challenging situations individually and as part of a team
    • Good communication skills
    • Excellent negotiating skills
    • ICT literate and able to use a range of software including Outlook, Word, Excel and databases at least to a basic level
    • Willing to work outside normal office hours on occasion
    • Ability to travel to other locations within and outside the borough to attend meetings, training, home visits
    • Literate and fluent in another language is desirable
