This is an exciting opportunity to start a career path within the highways sector where personal and professional development is provided with no previous experience required. In this role, you will work within a highways laboratory covering a wide range of test activities both in the laboratory and out on site.

The Service

The Highways and Transport service is responsible for ensuring the effective management, maintenance and improvement of all highway and transport assets. Highways are the most valuable asset managed by Surrey County Council with a replacement value of approximately £7.5bn and are critical to the economic growth of the County. Within the Highways and Transport service, the Network and Asset Management Group are responsible for developing and delivering asset management and managing the highway network.

The Team

The Laboratory Team sits within the Network and Asset Planning Group and is responsible for carrying out a range of UKAS accredited testing both in the laboratory and out on site.

As a team we work closely with internal and external clients, providing a range of specialist and technical testing services related to highways, advising and assisting colleagues, members, customers, and stakeholders to maximise service quality and efficiency.

The Role

This is a Professional Development Programme (PDP) position which provides a formal career development opportunity supported by a comprehensive training and development offer. This position has a grade span ranging between PS5HT - PS7. Staff in PDP roles will have set criteria and objectives to work to, which are designed to help them learn the skills and behaviours required to support them in their career development.

In this role, reporting to the Highway Construction Compliance Team Leader, you will occupy an essential role in on-site testing as well as on-site sampling, site inspections and material investigations, and occasionally laboratory-based testing. You will be provided with support to enable you to develop skills, competencies and relevant experience required to gain a professional qualification in civil engineering.

This role will involve working mainly on site, and at times you will be required to work unsocial hours.

It is essential that a full UK driving licence is held due to the nature of the job.

This role includes contributing to all the following:

  • With training, be capable of performing all routine site-based test activities, and some routine testing within the laboratory.
  • Cover site work as required including any on-site testing and sampling.
  • Monitoring workmanship on site.
  • Work with a range of internal and external clients.
  • Help support trials and evaluations of new materials and ways of working.
  • Working as part of a busy team with a varied workload.

To be shortlisted to interview for this position your application will clearly evidence:

  • Minimum of 5 GCSE’s or equivalent.
  • Good standard of communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work unsocial hours when required.
  • Good IT skills including MS Office.
  • An interest in pursuing a career in civil engineering.
