If you are an ambitious town planner looking for a career enhancing role with significant opportunity to gain valuable management experience and progress within the Council, this is the ideal role. The Planning Policy team at Runnymede Borough Council is finalising the new Runnymede 2030 Local Plan through to adoption, beginning the policy implementation and looking forward to its future review.   This position provides a great opportunity for the postholder to raise their profile and quickly enhance their personal development by leading on key projects and providing management support to the Local Plans Manager.

Who we are?

Runnymede’s location close to London and Heathrow Airport, make it an interesting and exciting place to pursue the challenges of plan making and delivery. The Local Plan sets out ambitious growth for the Borough, including a new Garden Village and Enterprise Zone at Longcross.  In addition, National Strategic Infrastructure Projects such as the expansion at Heathrow, the Southampton to London pipeline, as well as the planned delivery of a major flood alleviation scheme in the Borough all present opportunities for the successful candidate to broaden their planning knowledge and strengthen their skillset.

The Planning Policy team is small, friendly and ambitious and sits within the Planning Policy and Economic Development Business Unit.  Our aim is to deliver growth in a way that respects and maintains the character of Runnymede and delivers infrastructure and services to support it.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a confident, self-motivated and diplomatic person with a positive work ethic who wants to develop their professional and management skills within a supportive and friendly environment.  Applicants will require an RTPI accredited degree or equivalent, evidence of relevant continuous professional development, chartered membership of the RTPI or eligibility for membership and have significant planning experience, some of which should ideally have been gained in a planning policy environment.  You will need to be highly organised, able to prioritise and effectively manage a varied workload and work independently as well as in a team. You should be able to work positively with members, officers and a range of partners, motivating others where necessary, be able to give clear accurate advice and be confident in representing the Council at a range of external meetings and events as well as at Public Inquiries.  You will demonstrate good verbal, written, numerical and IT skills and be an effective problem solver.  You must have a full driving license with access to a vehicle insured for business use.

What can we offer you?

Our team provides a supportive and positive environment in which to work and develop.  This role will allow you to develop your professional, management and leadership skills with opportunities to supervise and mentor junior staff members.

Runnymede is a highly attractive place to live and work, located close to London and within one of the most economically dynamic locations in the UK.  It is home to a number of historic towns and villages and surrounded by beautiful countryside and parks. Our modern offices are based in Addlestone town centre which has a cinema, shops, gym and station all within walking distance.

In addition to a competitive salary, training and development opportunities and a supportive workplace culture that allows you to develop and grow, Runnymede Borough Council offers a competitive benefits package including:

  • 23 days annual leave rising to 28 days subject to length of service
  • flexible working arrangements
