Woking Borough Council

About Woking

Situated in the heart of Surrey, 25 miles to the South West of London, Woking is a modern town with excellent road and rail links to London and the South West. It’s within 10 minutes drive of M25 and close to both Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Woking’s modern town centre boasts convenient shopping, a first class theatre and cinema complex and a cosmopolitan choice of restaurants, bars and pubs.

With its combination of an attractive environment, a wide range of sporting and leisure facilities and the locally high standards of education, workforce skills and business support, the Borough is a quality location in which to live and work

Today, Woking is home to the national or regional HQs of many leading companies including Formula 1 manufacturers Tag McLaren Group; computer services and software company Cap Gemini Ernst and Young; Telewest and the Ambassadors Theatre Group.

Sixty percent of the Borough is green belt and wooded with over 1170 acres of common land. There’s a range of high quality residential housing in both town and village locations and an excellent choice of state and private schools in the area.

About the Council

We are an innovative, forward thinking organisation which gets things done (Improvement and Development Agency report Nov 2001) through a dedicated team of 36 councillors and over 600 staff.

Our vision ‘Towards tomorrow today’ developed through consultation with both our politicians and our employees - makes clear our intention to consistently and innovatively deliver quality services to our customers, and to make a valuable and lasting difference to the well-being of the whole community.

It’s underpinned by a set of key values which among other things recognise our commitment to the learning and development of our employees.

Each and every one of us, both individually and through team working plays a vital role in the smooth-running of the organisation and the work to help realize the key aims for the Borough’s future set out in Woking’s Community Strategy. This is a blueprint for Woking’s future which we have developed together with local people and our partner organisations and which informs our policies and decision making.

We are the first and only local authority in the country to have won a Queens Award for Enterprise for our sustainable energy practices and our commitment to environmental sustainability is set out in the recently published A climate change strategy for Woking.

We’re also committed to making the best use of technology to meet the needs of our customers (more details are available here – link to IEG statement on website)
