Salary:£21,108 - £25,314

Hours:36 hours per week

Working pattern:Full Time, Permanent position

Surrey Highways is responsible for the planning and maintenance of all the roads within the County.

We currently require a calm and committed problem solver to be the local representative of Surrey Highways, and to act as the focal information point for all highway activity within a defined local area.

In this capacity, you will specifically be asked to ensure the implementation of the County Council’s Customer Care Policy in relation to highways maintenance and to take ownership of your geographical area of responsibility.

We require you to be an excellent communicator, as you will be supporting maintenance engineers in all aspects of maintenance works, and as our public representative, you will also have to communicate and engage proactively and responsively with customers, and with all the stakeholders involved. In fact, the resources available for tackling highway maintenance issues are always limited, so managing customers’ expectations – and mediating any resulting frustrations – will be of crucial relevance to this role.

Over time – and following comprehensive training – you will be expected to have a thorough understanding of the concerns and aspirations of the local community regarding highway maintenance, road safety and environmental/streetscene issues. Through direct action and partnership working, you should take every opportunity to improve these issues, and to ensure that improvements take place within the specified resources and timescales.

Your job will entail a substantial degree of on-site working, as you will be expected to assist with the programming of minor maintenance works, and to undertake daily sample inspections of highway works in the Spelthorne Area. In this way, you will assist the central Streetworks team in ensuring that these works are co-ordinated, so that they minimise disruption to the travelling public.

Ideally, you will already be working within a similar government area, but if you are the ideal candidate, all the training that you will need to perform your job will be provided by us. It is essential that you can demonstrate an ability to prioritise a varied work-load, are a good team player, and that you understand the importance of customer care.

For an informal discussion about this role, please contact Annette Williamson on 0208 541 7328.

Interview date: 5 November 2008.
