About the Council?

Runnymede includes the towns and villages of Addlestone, Chertsey, Egham, Egham Hythe, Englefield Green, Lyne, New Haw, Ottershaw, Row Town, Thorpe, Woodham and Virginia Water. The area covers 7,804 hectares of which the population is 82,600 (Office for National Statistics, 2008)

The Council's principal aim is enhance the quality of life for residents and provide an attractive environment for businesses and visitors. To achieve this aim, the Council and its partners will focus on shaping a Runnymede of healthier, safer and more prosperous communities. The council was rated excellent in 2003 in a Comprehensive Performance Assessment by the Audit Commission.

Individuals and groups can experience a range of barriers that prevent them enjoying the same quality of life as their peers. The Council's aim is to ensure that its services are equally accessible by all people who need them, irrespective of gender, race, disability or age. This has been the Council's stated aim since adoption of the Equal Opportunities policy in 1995 and is integrated into normal working practices.
