Mole Valley District Council

Mole Valley District Council - Much more than meets the eye

Introduction

Based in the market town of Dorking, Mole Valley District Council provides services to 80,000 residents across 100 square miles of outstanding Surrey countryside outside the M25 and mid-way between London and the south coast.

We are in classic stockbroker or commuter belt country. Apart from the main conurbations surrounding Dorking and Leatherhead the majority of the area comprises quintessentially English villages dotted amongst beauty spots such as Boxhill, a National Trust designated area of special scientific interest, Leith Hill, Ranmore and Wooton Commons and the White Downs.

We have one of the lowest areas for crime in the country. For many years unemployment has been significantly less than 1%, resulting in more jobs being available than applicants to fill them. Quality schools are available in both the public and private sectors.

Our work involves delivering a level of service, either directly or with partners, to ensure that we are actively playing a part in providing high quality of life standards to the local community. As a relatively affluent part of the world we are fortunate to be able to concentrate many of our energies into improving lifestyles, but there are members of our community who need practical assistance from us too. We work hard therefore to ensure these people benefit from the services we provide.

Our Community

In Mole Valley there is much more going on that immediately meets the eye. From the Leatherhead Leisure Centre to the wealth of antique shops in Dorking, from organized historic walks to a local Youth Poet Laureate Scheme, from a superb choice of pubs and restaurants to rugby matches.

People here have a sense of pride in their own community and its well being and actively participate not just in what is going on but in articulating what needs to be done to further improve things for the populace. We facilitate this process through a residents' panel that is surveyed annually and a high street Help Shop.

As an area featuring truly stunning countryside, some of which can be seen from the offices, we have many visitors to the area from day trippers to people who choose Mole Valley for a longer break, perhaps taking in a tour of Denbies Winery - the largest winemaking centre in the UK.

There is a lot to offer the resident and visitor and we constantly strive to ensure it continues that way.

Working at Mole Valley District Council

We operate a first-name terms, dynamic, interesting and lively environment. We are an enormously approachable team - we elicit many favourable unsolicited comments from visitors on the generous welcome they are given.

Our purpose built open-plan offices are set in parkland with tennis courts and a bowling green. We are immediately across the road from the Sports Centre (which opened in 2003 and offers a 6 lane 25m swimming pool with learner pool, sports hall, gym, aerobics studio, crèche and café) and Dorking Halls ( which provides bars, café, cinema offering new release films and venues providing a range of entertainment from theatrical productions and rock concerts to one man shows) The offices are only a 2 minute walk from shops in the High Street. For those who travel to work by car we provide free parking alongside the office and the nearest railway stations (Dorking has three!) are just a 5 minute walk away.

There is a very professional ethos here together with a high degree of dedication. Staff often put themselves out to go the extra mile - we are certainly not a Council of clock watchers! The 5 Council priorities for 2006/9 are Safer and Stronger Neighbourhoods, Value for Money and Efficiency, Waste Management and Recycling, Young People and Affordable Housing. We invite you to watch our broadcasting of committee/Council meetings available from our home page.

We provide many of the benefits you would expect from progressive local government. All staff receive excellent training, access to a final salary pension scheme (LGPS), the occupational health scheme, discounted medical insurance and the staff restaurant located at Pippbrook. Many work flexi-time and some are entitled to lease cars.

If you are interested in a career with us take a look at our current vacancies. We look forward to welcoming you to our special part of Surrey. For more information about the Council and our services visit our home page at www.molevalley.gov.uk.
